About the Position

Introduction

Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP) aims to onboard a million developers to the on-chain ecosystem by providing easy-to-use and trusted developer tools. We build API and SDK products for wallets, paymasters, staking, stablecoins, on-chain data, and more. Operating like a startup within Coinbase, we prioritize speed, ownership, and developer satisfaction.

This role is specifically for Coinbase Commerce, a powerful payment processing platform enabling merchants to securely accept crypto payments. It offers a user-friendly interface and seamless integrations with platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, and Farcaster, helping businesses reach a global customer base.

Responsibilities

Lead, manage, and mentor a team of talented, full-stack engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders (product managers, designers, business leaders) to define and execute the technical vision and roadmap for Coinbase Commerce.
Drive the adoption of engineering best practices, including Agile methodologies, test-driven development, and rapid continuous integration/continuous deployment.
Ensure the scalability, security, and reliability of the Coinbase Commerce platform, optimizing performance and addressing technical challenges.
Provide technical guidance and support to the team, facilitating technical discussions and decision-making.
Contribute to the architectural design and development of key components and services for Coinbase Commerce, leveraging crypto-native expertise and hands-on coding skills.
Write code, review pull requests, provide constructive feedback, and maintain high code quality standards, leading by example.
Collaborate with other engineering leaders to align team goals and priorities with broader organizational objectives.
Drive the recruitment and hiring process for the Coinbase Commerce engineering team, actively seeking crypto-native talent with a startup mindset.
Manage the team's budget, resources, and capacity planning, ensuring efficient allocation to meet deadlines and business goals.
Monitor and report on key metrics and performance indicators, using data-driven insights to continuously improve team processes and outcomes.
Serve as a technical spokesperson for Coinbase Commerce, representing the team in company-wide initiatives and external crypto community events.

Requirements

8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in engineering management.
Strong technical background in full-stack development, with expertise in languages such as Ruby, Go, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
Hands-on coding experience, with the ability to contribute to the codebase, review pull requests, and provide technical guidance.
Experience in building and scaling high-performance, secure, and reliable payment processing systems in a crypto-native environment.
Deep understanding of Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains, and hands-on experience with smart contract development using Solidity.
Proven track record of leading and managing high-performing engineering teams in a fast-paced, agile, and crypto-focused startup environment.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and mentor team members in the dynamic crypto landscape.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, focused on driving results and delivering value to the business and the broader crypto community.
Experience with Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Kanban) and a commitment to continuous improvement and learning.
Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS) and experience with containerization like Kubernetes.
Deep understanding of web security best practices and experience implementing secure coding practices for financial systems in the crypto space.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
Passion for Onchain/Web3 and a deep understanding of the crypto ecosystem and its potential applications.

Nice to Have

Experience integrating with platforms like Shopify or WooCommerce.
Prior experience in a startup environment.
