Staff Software Engineer - Fraud

Introduction

Our Risk product engineering teams at Mercury are dedicated to building intelligent, automated systems and operational tools that enable seamless and trustworthy business applications. We leverage machine learning and AI alongside human judgment to power the next generation of business banking, ensuring fast, safe, and delightful onboarding experiences. We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join us in building the critical systems and tools for fraud prevention and due diligence.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, implementation, and long-term roadmap for core systems supporting various fraud prevention use cases.
• Own the end-to-end delivery of large, cross-functional projects, translating ambiguous high-impact problems into strategy and execution, making pragmatic trade-offs, and driving teams to measurable outcomes.
• Design, build, and operate highly available, low-latency backend systems for real-time scoring and decisioning in fraud prevention.
• Partner with Data Science and ML teams to productionize models, build reliable ML data pipelines, and enable real-time model serving.
• Establish and elevate department-level best practices, review designs, drive engineering quality, and act as a trusted advisor on architectural trade-offs.
• Mentor and grow engineers, documenting learnings and sharing technical direction through writing, 1:1s, and team meetings.
• Navigate and influence multiple stakeholders, align teams, communicate trade-offs to technical and non-technical partners, and independently resolve cross-team issues.

Requirements

• 7-10+ years of software development experience, with a strong focus on the backend.
• Knowledge of or excitement to learn Haskell.
• Prior experience as a technical lead, making architectural decisions and understanding their long-term impact. Ability to clearly articulate technical opinions and trade-offs.
• Passionately product-minded with experience building and shipping new products, balancing reliability and velocity.
• Comfortable driving discussions in areas with ambiguous ownership, approaching them with empathy, and focused on achieving outcomes.
• Proactive in mentoring and sharing knowledge and learnings through writings, 1:1s, and team meetings.

Nice to Have

• Experience in fintech, fraud systems, or the broader risk domain.
