About the Position

Responsibilities

Serve as the Toronto site tech lead for the Online Storage team, providing technical direction and daily guidance for engineers in Storage and Search.
Evolve Zip's search infrastructure (OpenSearch, search APIs, Global Search) into a unified, intelligent, and measurable platform.
Mature Zip's core storage stack (Aurora RDS, Elasticache, MemoryDB, DynamoDB, S3) to support multi-region, multi-cell architectures for global expansion.
Drive complete cell isolation to prevent failure cascade across cells.
Improve disaster recovery posture for stateful systems, validating RTO and RPO targets through fire drills.
Enhance the performance and debuggability of Zip's data layer, providing clear tooling for quickly diagnosing and resolving regressions.
Collaborate with the San Francisco-based Online Storage team and product engineering teams to design new features and architectural patterns.
Mentor engineers on the Toronto team, fostering growth and maintaining high quality for technical outcomes.

Requirements

5+ years of software engineering experience, with significant time spent on platform or infrastructure teams.
Deep, hands-on experience with large-scale distributed storage systems including relational databases, caching layers, and cloud-managed storage (e.g., Aurora RDS, Redis/Elasticache, DynamoDB, S3).
Proven experience designing or operating search infrastructure (e.g., OpenSearch, Elasticsearch) at scale, including relevance tuning, index architecture, and freshness considerations.
Track record of delivering large, complex infrastructure projects end-to-end with high quality and clear communication.
Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership through design reviews, mentorship, and setting standards.

Nice to Have

Experience with multi-region or multi-cell architectures and challenges related to data residency and routing.
Familiarity with data access layer patterns (ORM, Ent/TAO) and their interaction with underlying storage performance.
Experience with implementing or improving disaster recovery processes, including fire drills and RTO/RPO validation.
Comfort operating across multiple time zones with distributed partner teams.
