Senior Software Engineer, Internal AI

Introduction

Zip is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to be the technical anchor of its new Internal AI team. This role focuses on building central capabilities and serving as the architecture funnel for non-product AI across the organization, ensuring efficient and secure AI adoption.

Responsibilities

• Build central platform capabilities, services, agents, centralized products, and MCP integrations that non-software engineering teams use as building blocks.
• Serve as the architecture funnel for non-product AI, reviewing use cases and recommending appropriate solutions (off-the-shelf tools, Claude skills, Notion agents, no-code, or custom builds).
• Enforce application-level standards, including integration patterns, data handling, identity, evaluations, and observability.
• Act as the single interface into core Engineering for infrastructure needs, triaging and sequencing requests for Foundations and Security teams.
• Develop and ship solutions to production standards (reviewed, version-controlled, observable, documented, owned) when no off-the-shelf path fits.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience building and operating backend applications in production, with a bias towards application, integration, and data-pipeline work.
• Strong understanding of hosting, identity, secrets, and data flow to credibly collaborate with core infrastructure teams.
• Robust architectural vocabulary, comfortable reviewing designs and guiding others with empathy.
• Pragmatic approach to technology, selecting the most suitable tool for the job (e.g., Python/Node, n8n, Claude Cowork).
• Hands-on experience with modern AI tooling, including Claude Code, Cowork, MCP, LLM APIs, and evaluations, with clear opinions on when AI is not the right solution.
• Excellent communication skills, essential for consulting engineers and non-engineers while maintaining standards.
• Comfortable working in ambiguous environments where established processes may not yet exist.

Nice to Have

• Experience bridging core engineering with business/Go-To-Market teams (e.g., internal AI, DevEx, business systems engineering).
• Familiarity with Zip’s technology stack or comparable tools: AWS, Snowflake, n8n, Salesforce, Notion, Slack, Okta.
