Introduction

Zip is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to be the engineering anchor of its new Internal AI team. This role focuses on building central product and platform capabilities to accelerate AI adoption across various non-software engineering use cases within Zip.

Responsibilities

• Build central platform capabilities that multiply the rest of the org. Ship services, agents, centralized products, and MCP integrations used as building blocks by non-software engineering teams.
• Be the architecture funnel for non-product AI. Review use cases from other teams, recommend appropriate solutions (off-the-shelf tools, AI skills, no-code platforms, or custom builds), and filter out low-value ideas.
• Hold the application-layer bar. Set and enforce application-level standards for integration patterns, data handling, identity, evaluations, and observability.
• Be the single interface into core Engineering. Act as the funnel point for business requests requiring core infrastructure (hosting, production scheduling, data warehousing), ensuring requests are triaged, reduced, sequenced, and specced.
• Ship when building is the right call. Develop solutions to production standards, ensuring they are reviewed, version-controlled, observable, documented, and properly owned.

Requirements

• 6+ years experience building and operating backend applications in production, with a bias towards application, integration, and data-pipeline work.
• Strong infrastructure sensibility, including understanding hosting, identity, secrets, and data flow to credibly collaborate with core infrastructure teams.
• Strong architectural vocabulary, comfortable reviewing designs and guiding others on appropriate patterns.
• Pragmatic approach, choosing the simplest effective tool (Python/Node, n8n, existing AI skills, etc.), and knowing when not to build.
• Hands-on experience with modern AI tooling: Claude Code, Cowork, MCP, LLM APIs, and evaluations. Opinionated about when AI is not the right solution.
• Strong communication skills, capable of consulting engineers and non-engineers and maintaining standards without becoming a blocker.
• Comfortable with ambiguity in a new function where established processes may not yet exist.

Nice to Have

• Experience bridging core engineering and business/GTM teams (e.g., internal AI, DevEx, business systems engineering).
• Familiarity with Zip’s stack or comparable technologies: AWS, Snowflake, n8n, Salesforce, Notion, Slack, Okta.
