Senior Product Engineer (Guardians) - Remote Latin America

Introduction

Bitso, the leading cryptocurrency platform in Latin America, is seeking a Senior Product Engineer to join our Guardians service unit. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing and delivering features that protect Bitso's users and platform, spanning KYC, account security, fraud prevention, and internal account management tools. We are a diverse, remote-first team committed to making crypto useful and driving financial innovation. You will contribute to our mission by leveraging your full-stack engineering expertise and critical thinking, augmented by AI tools, to build robust and user-centric financial infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Design and deliver end-to-end features across database, backend, BFF (Backend for Frontend), and frontend layers.
• Strategically utilize AI tools (LLMs like Claude, GPT, Copilot, Cursor) for solution exploration, code generation, implementation review, and accelerating delivery while maintaining high quality.
• Troubleshoot production issues efficiently using AI-assisted workflows and MCP-connected observability and incident management tools.
• Make technical decisions grounded in engineering principles and market awareness, clearly articulating trade-offs.
• Challenge existing processes and propose improvements to optimize team workflows.
• Provide technical insights during planning, assessing feasibility, identifying risks, and aiding in prioritization.
• Mentor and support teammates through knowledge sharing, thoughtful code reviews, and raising the team's engineering standards.
• Take ownership of outcomes, focusing on the performance and problem-solving effectiveness of delivered features.

Requirements

• Clear and effective communication in English.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience across backend and frontend systems, including mobile.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Ability to work within a GMT-6 to GMT-3 timezone.

Engineering Fundamentals

• Strong understanding of software engineering principles: data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and designing for performance, scalability, and availability.
• Experience with cloud architectures (AWS), microservices, and distributed systems.
• Proficiency with relational databases (especially PostgreSQL) and familiarity with caching layers (Redis) and asynchronous processing (Kafka or similar).
• Ability to read, understand, and contribute to codebases in multiple languages; Java and TypeScript are primary.

Product and Market Awareness

• Ability to understand industry-standard patterns in modern products and drive implementation decisions based on user expectations.
• Comfort navigating ambiguity: capable of researching loosely defined requirements to propose concrete technical approaches across DB, BE, BFF, and FE layers.

AI-Augmented Engineering

• Comfortable and effective working with LLMs as a core tool for exploration, code generation, debugging, and architectural reasoning.
• Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated output, knowing when to trust, challenge, and iterate on prompts.
• Experience (or strong aptitude) using AI to accelerate work across unfamiliar domains.
• Ability to leverage AI and MCP-connected tools (observability, incident management, databases) for efficient production issue resolution.

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with security, identity, fraud prevention, or fintech domains; curiosity and ability to ramp up quickly are highly valued.
• Deep experience in some of the technologies in our stack (adaptability over narrow specialization is prioritized):
  • Backend: Java (Spring Boot), microservices, event-driven architectures (Kafka).
  • BFF: Server-driven UI, API aggregation, and orchestration.
  • Frontend: TypeScript, Next.js, React, React Native.
  • Infrastructure: AWS, containerization, CI/CD pipelines.
  • Data: PostgreSQL, Redis.
