Senior Engineering Manager, Release Engineering

Introduction

Every line of code shipped at Mercury undergoes rigorous builds, tests, and gates before reaching customers. Release Engineering is the team behind this seamless, reliable process, owning the CI/CD platform, build infrastructure, deployment tooling, and practices that enable 400+ engineers to deliver with confidence. We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead this team, partnering with the Backend Developer Experience team to ensure a fast, reliable, and secure software delivery lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of four engineers focusing on CI/CD infrastructure, build systems, deployment, and developer tooling.
• Foster a culture of operational excellence, driving measurable improvements in pipeline reliability, build times, and deployment confidence.
• Own Mercury's end-to-end release pipeline, from pull request merge to production.
• Define and execute the strategy for enhancing build performance, test reliability, deployment safety (canaries, feature flags, rollbacks), and developer velocity.
• Collaborate with Platform, Security, and Product Engineering teams to design and deliver scalable systems.
• Establish and promote release engineering best practices across Mercury's engineering organization, setting standards for deployment frequency, change failure rate, and MTTR.
• Balance long-term platform investments with the daily reliability needs of 400+ engineers.
• Develop and maintain tooling that enforces compliance checkpoints and audit trails within the release pipeline without hindering team velocity.
• Recruit, mentor, and retain high-caliber engineers, helping them evolve into technical leads and elevating the team's overall capabilities.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience.
• 4+ years of experience managing engineering teams in high-growth or high-availability environments.
• Deep hands-on experience with CI/CD systems (e.g., Buildkite, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI) and supporting infrastructure.
• Strong background in build systems (Bazel, Buck2), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar).
• Proven track record of significantly improving release velocity and reliability, using data-driven decision-making.
• Experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments, such as fintech, payments, or banking.
• Excellent cross-functional communication skills, capable of translating between engineering depth and business impact, and effective collaboration with Security, Compliance, and Product leaders.
• A pragmatic philosophy that positions release infrastructure as a force multiplier for product engineers.
• Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and retain exceptional talent.
