Introduction

Mercury is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead their Release Engineering team. This role is crucial for ensuring a seamless, reliable, and efficient software delivery lifecycle, from code commit to production, within a rapidly scaling fintech environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of four engineers focusing on CI/CD infrastructure, build systems, deployment automation, and developer tooling.
• Foster a strong culture of operational excellence, with measurable improvements in pipeline reliability, build times, and deployment confidence.
• Manage Mercury's entire release pipeline, ensuring it is fast, reliable, observable, and secure.
• Strategize and execute initiatives to enhance build performance, test reliability, deployment safety (e.g., canaries, feature flags, rollbacks), and developer velocity.
• Collaborate with Platform, Security, and Product Engineering teams to design and implement systems that meet the demands of a high-growth fintech company.
• Define and promote release engineering best practices across Mercury's engineering organization, setting standards for deployment frequency, change failure rate, and MTTR.
• Balance long-term platform investments with the immediate reliability requirements of over 400 engineers deploying code daily.
• Develop and maintain tools to enforce compliance checkpoints and audit trails within the release pipeline, without hindering team productivity.
• Recruit, mentor, and retain top-tier engineers, helping them advance into technical leadership roles and elevating the team's overall capabilities.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience.
• 4+ years managing engineering teams in high-growth or high-availability environments.
• Extensive hands-on experience with CI/CD systems (e.g., Buildkite, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CircleCI) and their supporting infrastructure.
• Strong background in build systems (Bazel, Buck2), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar).
• Proven ability to significantly improve release velocity and reliability, using data-driven decision-making.
• Experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments (fintech, payments, or banking experience is a plus).
• Exceptional cross-functional communication skills, adept at bridging technical details with business impact and effectively partnering with Security, Compliance, and Product leaders.
• A pragmatic philosophy, viewing release infrastructure as a force multiplier for product engineers, not a bureaucratic obstacle.
• Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and retain outstanding talent, with a serious commitment to hiring and team development.

What Success Looks Like

• First 90 days: Deep understanding of Mercury's release infrastructure, established trust with your team, and identified key opportunities for pipeline performance and developer experience improvements.
• Within six months: Shipped significant improvements to build reliability, deployment speed, or observability, with a clear roadmap for the upcoming year.
• Long-term: Transformed Mercury's release process into an industry model for fast yet stable fintech development.
