Senior AI Applied Software Engineer

Introduction

Backbase is establishing a new Business Development Center in Krakow, the heart of Backbase Poland, aiming to foster growth and innovation. We are building new teams and are looking for an experienced Senior AI Applied Software Engineer to join our newly formed AI Foundation team within the R&D organization. In this role, you will be instrumental in laying the foundation for AI competencies at Backbase, contributing to the adoption of AI in the financial services industry.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain AI-powered software solutions, integrating them into Backbase's fintech platform.
• Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code that adheres to industry best practices and architectural guidelines.
• Collaborate with other engineering teams across the organization to identify AI integration opportunities, ensuring alignment with product roadmaps and delivery of tangible business value.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Backbase AI Foundation by researching and evaluating new AI technologies, tools, and methodologies.
• Act as a mentor, providing technical guidance to junior engineers and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
• Develop and implement robust testing strategies for AI models and applications, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and scalability.
• Help define and advocate for best practices in model governance, explainability, fairness, and privacy within AI development.
• Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and architectural planning to ensure the overall quality and maintainability of our software products.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in software development.
• 3+ years of experience with Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning in a production environment.
• Proven ability to design and implement end-to-end AI applications, leveraging deep learning frameworks, MLOps practices, and cloud-based AI services.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Java, and experience with relevant AI/ML libraries and frameworks.
• Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.
• Practical knowledge and experience with some of the following: Machine Learning, Large Language Models (LLMs), Search (e.g., Lucene, Elasticsearch, Haystack), Agents (e.g., Langchain, AutoGen), Knowledge Graphs (e.g., Neo4j, GraphQL Query Language), Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG).
• Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex technical challenges and propose effective solutions.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
