About the Position

Introduction

HubSpot is seeking a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to join their AI Platform Group. This role focuses on developing AI Context systems that enable HubSpot's AI to understand diverse customer, company, activity, and workflow data across their CRM platform. As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer, you will be instrumental in defining the technical direction for applied ML and AI systems, translating complex data into valuable customer insights.

Responsibilities

Lead high-value, high-impact, cross-team, and cross-product projects, setting the technical bar for engineering and ML organizations.
Shape product vision and drive technical direction through strong collaboration and hands-on execution.
Stay actively involved in technical design, model development, production systems, and coding.
Develop solutions for ambiguous problems that significantly impact customer experience, product strategy, or business goals.
Provide strategic direction and architectural leadership for major ML and AI projects.
Mentor, coach, and teach engineers, guiding senior ICs through complex technical projects.
Make pragmatic decisions and solve problems effectively, choosing the right approach (ML, LLMs, retrieval, rules, platform changes, or product changes).
Design architectures for ML and AI Context problems, identifying effective ML solutions in adjacent product areas.
Analyze beyond offline and online metrics, considering privacy, bias, security, reliability, cost, maintainability, model quality, and data governance across the ML lifecycle.
Build reliable, scalable systems for data processing, feature generation, context retrieval, model training, inference, experimentation, monitoring, and feedback loops.
Guide teams to innovate beyond the status quo, fostering a shared vision for future development.
Leverage deep expertise in machine learning concepts like recommendation algorithms, classification, ranking, semantic retrieval, embeddings, entity understanding, and experimentation.
Transform messy, incomplete, or heterogeneous data (customer, company, activity, workflow, conversation, behavioral, CRM, unstructured document data) into useful AI context for customer-facing products.

Requirements

Proven track record of delivering high-value, high-impact, cross-team and cross-product projects.
Proficiency in ML techniques including deep learning, optimization, regression, transformers, large language models, transfer learning, retrieval, ranking, recommendations, classification, NLP, and personalization.
Experience with ML tools and frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and modern model-serving and evaluation systems.
Expertise in crafting appropriate architectures for various ML and AI Context problems.
Strong judgment regarding the application of different AI/ML approaches.
Experience turning diverse data into useful AI context for customer-facing products.
