About the Position

Introduction

Our client is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer (Python) to spearhead the scaling of a rapidly growing selection platform. This platform is actively used by customers weekly, and the role involves owning core backend services, integrations, and architecture, while also setting the technical standard for a compact engineering team.

Responsibilities

Lead and mentor a small, impactful backend team, fostering their growth and ensuring high-quality code delivery.
Architect, design, and implement scalable and reliable backend services (Python, Django) that support the core platform.
Drive technical discussions and decisions, ensuring alignment with the overall product strategy.
Collaborate closely with product managers, data scientists, and frontend engineers to define and deliver innovative solutions.
Optimize and troubleshoot production systems, ensuring high availability and performance.
Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and advocate for their adoption where appropriate.
Contribute to the overall engineering culture, promoting best practices and continuous improvement.

Requirements

7+ years of experience in backend development, with a strong focus on Python and Django.
Proven experience leading and mentoring engineering teams.
Expertise in designing and building scalable, fault-tolerant, and high-performance microservices architectures.
Strong understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL) and experience with ORMs.
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and deployment strategies.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
A passion for building impactful products and a desire to make a real difference.
Dutch language skills preferred (working knowledge required for this role based in the Netherlands).

Nice to Have

Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
Familiarity with asynchronous programming (Celery, Kafka).
Knowledge of machine learning integration in backend systems.
