Head of Engineering

Founded in 2020 out of a passion for Recruitment, HR, and Tech, Haystack People operates from offices in Amsterdam and Enschede, serving the Dutch and European market. This specific client is a market-leading scale-up in the Netherlands with approximately 100 employees, a technical department of around 40 FTE, and international ambitions, having completed two successful investment rounds.

Introduction

As Head of Engineering, you will lead and develop the entire engineering department of a market-leading scale-up in the Netherlands. You will drive innovation, continuous improvement, and operational excellence, acting as an inspiring leader focusing on both technical vision and execution.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the engineering department, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
• Formulate and implement the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap aligned with business objectives.
• Ensure close collaboration with product, project, and management teams.
• Manage and optimize software development processes and methodologies.
• Coach and mentor team leaders and engineers, promoting their professional growth.
• Monitor the quality, scalability, and performance of all software products.
• Manage the technical architecture and infrastructure.
• Implement best practices and new technologies to strengthen the teams.
• Lead recruitment efforts to expand the team with top engineers.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership technical role (e.g., Head of Engineering, Engineering Manager, Lead Developer).
• Extensive knowledge and experience with modern software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum).
• Strong background in software architecture, microservices, and cloud-native solutions.
• Proven experience in leading, coaching, and developing teams.
• Excellent communication skills and stakeholder management capabilities.
• Strategic thinker with a hands-on mentality.
• Experience with relevant technologies such as AWS, Azure, GCP, NodeJS, PHP, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD.
• Dutch language skills preferred (working knowledge required for this role based in the Netherlands).
