About the Position
Introduction
As an Engineering Manager for the Gitaly team at GitLab, you will lead a high-performing team focused on securing, maintaining, and scaling GitLab's infrastructure platforms. You will be responsible for hiring, coaching, and developing team members, ensuring they can achieve their best work and deliver strong results.
Responsibilities
- Hire, lead, and support a high-performing Infrastructure Platforms team, fostering an environment where team members can excel and deliver strong results.
- Collaborate closely with Product Managers and other Engineering Managers to align business goals and customer needs with sound engineering practices, defining and delivering scalable infrastructure platforms.
- Oversee agile delivery for your team, including planning, prioritization, and execution of projects aimed at improving the operation of GitLab.com, GitLab Dedicated, and self-managed offerings.
- Guide the security, reliability, performance, and scalability of core platform components, working with your team on solution design, review, and iteration.
- Collaborate across Infrastructure Platforms, other Infrastructure groups, Support, and Customer Success to ensure platforms meet the needs of all teams running and supporting GitLab.
- Engage in technical discussions and reviews, unblocking complex issues, and clearly communicating technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Promote continuous improvement in service operations, including quality, observability, incident response, and operational efficiency.
- Participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation, working with reliability and development teams to achieve GitLab.com's availability goals.
Requirements
- Experience leading infrastructure, platform, or development teams at scale, with a proven track record of building high-performing, values-aligned teams.
- Excellent technical background, including strong infrastructure and platforms experience.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, Go(lang), and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices.
- Hands-on background in distributed storage, replication, or data durability at production scale.
- Familiarity with performance engineering: benchmarking, profiling, and scalability as standard practice.
- Ability to hire, develop, and coach team members, fostering an environment conducive to growth and impactful results.
- Effective cross-functional collaboration skills, including partnering with Product Managers, Engineering Managers, and other stakeholders to align on goals and outcomes.
- Ability to analyze complex technical issues and translate them into clear, actionable language for diverse audiences.
- Experience managing remote, globally distributed teams and thriving in an all-remote, asynchronous work environment.
- Passion for open source and developer tools, aligning with GitLab's values, inclusive culture, and high-performance expectations.
