Engineering Manager, Continuous Delivery

GitLab is a comprehensive DevSecOps platform. The GitLab Continuous Delivery (CD) team is a newly formed group within the Deploy stage, focusing on the next generation of CD capabilities. This team will primarily consist of Go engineers, with Ruby on Rails and frontend engineers joining as the product matures. The team operates in a collaborative, async-first environment, taking ownership of outcomes within an established company operating at significant scale.

Introduction

As an Engineering Manager for GitLab CD, you will spearhead a new, globally distributed team focused on the next generation of Continuous Deployment capabilities. This is a greenfield opportunity to build a first-class CD product within GitLab's DevSecOps platform, incorporating true reconciliation, live state awareness, durable orchestration, and AI-native governance.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead a new globally distributed engineering team, fostering an environment for growth and high performance.
• Recruit, onboard, and develop engineers who align with GitLab's values and uphold high standards of quality and ownership.
• Collaborate with Product Management and cross-functional engineering teams to define the roadmap, make architectural decisions, and meet product commitments.
• Promote engineering excellence in reliability, performance, security, and maintainability, while maintaining a fast pace.
• Champion the integration of AI tools into daily workflows to enhance efficiency and innovation.
• Conduct regular 1:1s, provide continuous feedback, and support professional development through coaching.
• Ensure a healthy delivery cadence by tracking milestone progress, identifying blockers, and proactive problem-solving.
• Participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation to achieve GitLab.com's availability targets.

Requirements

• Demonstrated leadership experience managing high-performing engineering teams.
• Hands-on technical credibility to provide architectural guidance and participate in technical discussions.
• Strong background in distributed systems and durable workflow execution, including state persistence and replay patterns.
• Experience building or leading teams focused on release orchestration, deployment automation, or continuous delivery at scale.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes deployment patterns and GitOps workflows, including progressive delivery strategies like blue/green and canary deployments.
• Experience with policy-based governance and event-driven architectures for enterprise-grade delivery systems.
• Proven ability to build and lead teams in early-stage contexts, including process definition, foundational hiring, and culture establishment.
• Strong cross-functional alignment and consensus-building skills, with the ability to drive decisions amid ambiguity.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a bias towards async, handbook-first practices, and transparency.
• Experience in remote-first, globally distributed organizations, comfortable with high autonomy and accountability.
• Track record of fostering inclusive team cultures where engineers feel psychologically safe to contribute and take calculated risks.
