Engineering Manager, Continuous Delivery

GitLab is a comprehensive DevSecOps platform. The GitLab CD team is a newly formed group within the Deploy stage, focusing on Continuous Delivery. The team will initially consist primarily of Go engineers, with Ruby on Rails and frontend engineers joining as the product matures. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a new initiative within an established company operating at significant scale, collaborating in an async-first environment with adjacent teams across Verify, Runner, and Infrastructure.

Introduction

As an Engineering Manager for GitLab CD, you will lead a new, globally distributed team focused on building the next generation of Continuous Deployment capabilities. This greenfield opportunity involves hiring foundational engineers, shaping team culture, and ensuring the delivery of a first-class CD product within GitLab's DevSecOps platform.

Your team will develop a CD engine that offers reconciliation, live state awareness, durable orchestration, and AI-native governance, empowering customers to deploy software reliably and confidently. This role is at the intersection of GitLab's core platform and AI strategy, providing high visibility and a fast-paced environment. You will collaborate closely with Product Management, cross-functional engineering teams, and infrastructure stakeholders, fostering a team culture aligned with GitLab's values.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead a new globally distributed engineering team, fostering an environment for career growth and optimal performance.
• Hire, onboard, and develop engineers who embody GitLab's values and maintain high standards of quality and ownership.
• Collaborate with Product Management and cross-functional engineering teams to shape the roadmap, make architectural decisions, and deliver on product commitments.
• Promote engineering excellence in reliability, performance, security, and maintainability, while maintaining product development pace.
• Champion AI by encouraging engineers to integrate AI tools into their workflows for efficiency and innovation.
• Conduct regular 1:1s, provide continuous feedback, and support professional growth through coaching and skill development.
• Ensure a healthy delivery cadence by monitoring milestone progress, identifying blockers, and proactively addressing issues.
• Participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation to meet GitLab.com's availability targets.

Requirements

• Demonstrated leadership experience managing high-performing engineering teams, with strong technical credibility for architectural guidance and technical discussions.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems and durable workflow execution, including state persistence and replay patterns.
• Experience building or leading teams focused on release orchestration, deployment automation, or continuous delivery at scale.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes deployment patterns and GitOps workflows, including progressive delivery strategies (e.g., blue/green, canary deployments).
• Experience with policy-based governance and event-driven architectures for reliable, enterprise-grade delivery systems.
• Proven ability to build and lead early-stage teams, including defining processes, hiring foundational members, and establishing team culture.
• Strong cross-functional alignment and consensus-building skills, with the ability to drive decisions amidst ambiguity or competing priorities.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a preference for async, handbook-first practices and transparency.
• Experience in remote-first, globally distributed organizations, comfortable with high autonomy and accountability.
• Track record of fostering inclusive team cultures where engineers feel psychologically safe to contribute, take calculated risks, and uphold high standards.
